“Lettuce Help You!” A Lettuce Garden Class

Learn how to create and care for a lettuce garden, as well as create your own lettuce garden to take home!

To register for the class click here. After registration you will be sent payment options for the $25 registration. Registration includes: a lettuce garden educational session and supplies to make a lettuce garden to take home.  Our lettuce garden will be made in a standard 10″ plastic greenhouse container and include 5 plants. If you would like to use a more decorative container for your lettuce garden, please bring that with you. Please register by March 18th.

Those attending the class will get a first peak at Tiger Garden’s cool season bedding plants! After the class ends, attendees will be able to browse and buy from the cool season plants available. We will also have a very limited selection of decorative lettuce garden containers available.

The class will be held March 19th at 6p.m. in the Floral Design Classroom, (Ag Building 2-31)We hope to see you there!

J. Schwanke- 2014 Artisit in Residence

We are very excited to announce that our artist in residence this year is, Mr. J. Schwanke.

Schwanke began his floral career at birth during a floral convention in Nebraska. He graduated from Midland College with a bachelor’s degree in Marketing as well as Public Relations. He trained for his career in flowers at the Cliff Mann School of Floral Technology in Denver Colorado and the Phil Rulloda School of Advance Floral Design in Phoenix Arizona. Schwanke joined his family’s floral business, Green’s Greenhouses Inc. in 1976 and directed the firm’s operations from 1981 through 1994 where consumer sales reached an all time high of over one million dollars. He then moved to Atlanta, Georgia in 1994 to begin an independent career as a floral marketing consultant and industry spokesperson. J’s outstanding presentation and speaking skills quickly propelled him into a full time position as a marketing consultant and promotions expert for many resourceful floral industry leaders.

Schwanke continues his well respected and successful consulting and marketing career today in Grand Rapids Michigan with his company JMHS Enterprises Inc. JMHS Enterprises consults, develops creative products and marketing plans, guides trend forecasting and produces educational videos, curriculum and classes to advance education and profits in all facets of the floral industry.Schwanke’s industrious reputation in the floral industry is far reaching. He has performed floral demonstrations and marketing presentations in every state in the union. Critics, sponsors and attendees agree J Schwanke is one of the most sought after motivational presenters and floral educators in the entire industry. We are very proud to have him as our guests at Mizzou.

Spring Wreath

This is our first class of the Spring semester, and we want to start it off right with a Spring Wreath! We will be using grapevine wreaths as our base and decorate them we’ll have a variety of: burlap, ribbon, silk flowers, picks, etc. During the class you will learn the basics of creating a wreath and a few florist’s tricks to putting them together. Once the short demonstration has ended, SAIFD members will be available to assist with making your wreath to take home!

The class plus supplies will be $35.00 payable online. You can also add a monogram letter to the middle of your wreath for an extra $5.00. To register click here and sign up with your name and email. Payment options will then be emailed to you. Payment is required before Monday, March 3rd.

The class will be held on Wednesday, March 4th at 6:00pm in the Ag Building 2-31, the floral design classroom behind Tiger Garden.

Join us for a Thanksgiving Centerpiece Class!

Impress your Thanksgiving guests with a beautiful floral centerpiece! Mizzou SAIFD will be offering a class to help you make your own centerpiece. We are excited for the evening and we hope you join us for the fun! The class will be November 20th at 6PM in room 2-31 Agriculture Building (the floral design classroom located behind Tiger Garden).


The class will have an educational portion including a demonstration and followed by a hands-on portion. The course fee of $40 covers all supplies needed to make the centerpiece pictured above (an $80 value). There will be a variety of fresh, faux and dried materials to choose from to put into your piece. Each piece will be unique! Any combination of materials will create a piece that will last through your Thanksgiving festivities with proper care.

We will provide warm cider and hot chocolate for your to enjoy during the class. You are welcome to bring snacks or supper to enjoy as you work.

Register for the class here. Once you register, you will receive an email to pay for your registration. Once we receive payment, your registration will be complete! Registration by Monday, November 18th and 5pm required.
